SERVED FOR OUR NATION? AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MEDALS

16-December-2011

Federal Member for Macquarie, Louise Markus MP, is encouraging all Australian Defence Force Regular and Reserve personnel to apply for the Australian Defence Medal (ADM) or the Anniversary of Service Medal (ANSM).

The ADM was established to recognise a demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia by personnel who have served for an initial enlistment period or four years, whichever is lesser, after 3 September 1945. The ANSM commemorates the 50th anniversary of the two national service schemes that operated in Australia during the 1950s and later from 1965 until 1972.

“The Australian Defence Medal and the Anniversary of Service Medal honours personnel who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to our nation and I encourage all eligible former and current service-men to apply,” said Mrs Markus.

Applications must be lodged with the Defence Honours and Awards, Department of Defence. Application forms can be found at the Department of Defence website (http://www.defence.gov.au/medals/Content/+055%20Application%20Forms/default.htm) and are also available through the RSL and other Ex-Service Organisations.

Relatives may make a posthumous claim for medals for which a family member qualified, however the Directorate will advise of the requirements for this dependent on the circumstances of each case.
